This book was an Amazon Prime Reading pick.

I was scanning amazon and stumbled across this little nugget. I sent it to my kindle and without any intention of even starting this book (yet) I made the mistake of skimming through the first few paragraphs, and just like that, I was hooked.

The uniqueness of the story and each of the characters is what caught my attention. Jo, a field biologist studying the nesting habits of birds finds a runaway "alien" child who spins a fanciful tale of how she came from another planet and must witness 5 miracles before she returns home. Unable to find any clues as to where the child, Ursa, actually came from and despite failed attempts at turning her over to the police, Jo begins to care deeply for Ursa.

When they meet Gabriel, the mysterious egg man, they begin to forge a friendship with him. Gabe is a kind man, caring for his mother and their farm while battling his own demons. This book touches on issues such as social anxiety, depression, Jo being a cancer survivor, and I felt it was done quite well.

This story is definitely not a sci-fi despite the alien child premise. It's more a love story, and heartwarming tale that will tug at the heartstrings. The ending was where I had some issue as it seemed a bit rushed and unrealistic. One character's personality conveniently changed completely. I also have to add, I've said it before and I will say it again, kill off all the fictional people you want but leave the animals alone. If I had known in advance that a dog would be harmed I would not have read this book at all.

That aside, I would say this was an okay debut novel. It wasn't perfect, but I think the author has promise.
