The Revolution of Ivy - REVIEW

This picks up right where The Book of Ivy left us after that horrible cliffhanger! In the first half of the book Ivy is struggling to survive after being put out beyond the walls of Westfall without any knowledge of how to fend for herself. After struggling for a week on her own she is found and taken in by Caleb and Ash. They take Ivy back to their camp where they teach her to hunt, fight, and survive off the land. It's here that we see Ivy come to terms with her banishment from Westfall and grow into a stronger, more independent person.

Year End Top Ten 2015

Six of Crows - REVIEW

Wow! This was quite possibly the best book I've read this year. I loved it that much. First of all, the book itself is beautiful. When I saw it for the first time I knew my bookshelf was just aching to display it. The pages are stained and it is so dark and gorgeous.

The book is written in multiple points of view which was essential in helping us get to know each of the characters. They were all incredibly complex and you learn their histories in bits and pieces as the story progresses. They are all thieves and misfits, working together to infiltrate a massively guarded prison to free a scientist for an outrageous sum of money. Leigh herself described it as Oceans 11 meets Game of Thrones.

If I Stay - REVIEW

I knew going into this book that it was going to be sad. I have to be in the mood for a good tearjerker and I certainly was when I settled in to read this one. I made sure I had nowhere to go the following day just in case this book kept me up until 3 am and left me a sobbing mess unfit for the public eye. Thankfully that didn't happen. I was very much moved by this story and I felt like it was beautifully written but I wasn't inconsolable, the way I was with books like the Fault in Our Stars or Allegiant.

After a terrible car accident that left Mia without parents she is in the hospital in intensive care and has to make the hardest decision of her life, to let go and join her family in death or fight for a second chance at life.

The Book of Ivy- REVIEW

"Often, when I am able to check out a book, I read it a dozen times before returning it, desperate to remain lost in the magic of someone else's story."

I kept passing over this book because I thought it was going to be another sub par dystopian novel. I was so wrong! And I'm glad I was. It does have the same dystopian backstory: a catastrophic event, in this case nuclear war, destroys the world and leaves very few people who have to figure out how to survive. After the war there was a disagreement between the Lattimer and the Westfall families about how to run things in this new world and the two went head to head. The Lattimer's defeated the Westfall's. To maintain the peace the Westfall daughters are married off to the Lattimer sons and vice versa. This year it is Ivy Westfall's turn to marry Bishop Lattimer, the President's son. Ivy's father is tired of being on the losing side and wants to take over control of the city. He, along with her sister Callie, have been training Ivy to kill Bishop so that the Westfall's can take over.

Winter - REVIEW

THIS is how you end a series! 823 pages of non-stop action. I am exhausted. Cinder is heading to Luna to start a revolution and remove Levana from the throne and it is quite the wild ride.

Princess Winter, the endearingly lovely (yet not entirely dealing with a full deck) step-daughter of Levana is suffering from major lunar sickness due to refusing to use her gift which causes her to spontaneously see bleeding walls or turn into a girl of ice and glass.

I chuckled through so many scenes between Winter and Scarlet because the two characters are so vastly different. Scarlet is no nonsense, ready to spring into action, save the world and help her friends while Winter tends to wander off in her own little world happily singing and howling to herself.

Cress - REVIEW

I LOVED this book! I didn't think it could possibly surpass Cinder, but it did, in a big way. Cress is the Rapunzel-like character of Marissa's series. She's an incredibly talented hacker who has been trapped on a satellite by Sybil, one of Levana's minions, since she was a child. She is socially awkward and naive but all that made her the perfect mix of damsel in distress and strong, capable woman. I found her absolutely adorable. She has a major crush on Captain Carswell Thorne and I just loved their scenes together.

Thorne loses his eyesight and there is a particular scene I thought was so sweet yet incredibly funny when he attempts to burst in heroically to save Cress but instead runs right past her, tries to shoot her attackers but can't figure out where to aim his gun, swings his cane wildly but can't hit anyone. I felt bad for the guy but couldn't stop laughing. He is cocky and full of himself but so funny and real and always has the best lines.
